Optional Activities

Read on to learn how to view LoRaWAN protocol frames, create an application integration, and add additional users to your account.

View Frames Sent Over LoRaWAN Networks

This section explains the different ways you can view messages that are received from and sent to the network server. These messages can be used for debugging purposes.

Note: No messages are saved by the network server. You must follow the instructions below to view messages in your browser window as they are transmitted.

View Device Frames Sent Over LoRaWAN Networks

You can view messages received by the network server from each device as well as all messages sent from the network server to the device on the LORAWAN FRAMES tab.

  1. Log into the Semtech Network Server.
  1. Click Applications in the menu on the left.
  1. Click the link to your application.
  1. Click the link to your device.
  1. Go to the LORAWAN FRAMES tab.

View Gateway Frames Sent Over LoRaWAN Networks

The gateway LORAWAN FRAMES tab lets you view messages received by the gateway from all devices in the vicinity of the gateway as well as all messages sent to the gateway from the network server.

  1. Log into the Semtech Network Server.
  1. Click Gateways in the menu on the left.
  1. Click the link to your gateway.
  1. Go to the LORAWAN FRAMES tab
  1. When this gateway receives messages from any device they appear here as UPLINK events. When messages are sent from this gateway they appear here as DOWNLINK events.

Create an Application Integration (Optional)

This section shows you how to configure an HTTP application integration so you can view your device data outside of the Semtech Network Server.

Create a REST Service

In this section you create a simple POST REST method for the integration to use. The free service Hookbin allows you to quickly create a POST endpoint for use with the HTTP integration. Other services are available such as RequestBin, or you can create your own service. We supply instructions for Hookbin, but you can choose to use an alternative service if you prefer.

  1. Open Hookbin.
  1. Click CREATE NEW ENDPOINT.
  1. Copy the URL displayed under the title Your Hookbin Endpoint. We refer to this as the POST_ENDPOINT.
  1. Do not close the page. Rather, once the integration is set up in the next step, refresh the page to see the data here.

Activate the HTTP Integration

  1. Log into the Semtech Network Server.
  1. Click Applications in the menu on the left.
  1. Click the link to your application.
  1. Select the INTEGRATIONS tab.

  1. Select the ADD button inside the HTTP integration within the list. You may need to scroll to the bottom.

Adding the HTTP Integration

Figure 45: Adding the HTTP Integration

  1. Fill out the form as follows:
  1. Payload marshaller: Select the JSON option
  1. Endpoint URL(s) for events: Paste in the POST_ENDPOINT saved in the previous step.
  1. Leave the remaining fields set to their defaults

Add HTTP Integration Form

  1. Click ADD INTEGRATION. The integration now appears at the top of the list:

Verify the HTTP Integration

  1. Log into the Semtech Network Server.
  1. Click Applications in the menu on the left.
  1. Click the link to your application.
  1. Click the link to your device.
  1. Go to the DEVICE DATA tab.
  1. Make sure your gateway and device are both turned on.
  1. Wait until you see a message appear in the DEVICE DATA tab. The amount of time this takes will depend on how often your device sends uplinks.

The device has now sent at least one message since you configured the integration, and your REST endpoint should also have received data.

  1. Reload the Hookbin page in your browser to view the data in Hookbin.

Note: If you accidentally closed the Hookbin page, you can open the POST_ENDPOINT in your browser to view the data.

Now that you have tested the HTTP integration you can turn it off by visiting Applications -> your application -> INTEGRATIONS. Select REMOVE in the HTTP integration tile.

Removing the HTTP:// integration

You can use the integrations feature to connect your devices to major cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, as well as IoT platforms such as ThingsBoard.

Add Additional Users

Semtech Network Server allows you to add multiple team members with different user rights.

Note: A Semtech Network Server user must already exist with the same email before they can be added.

  • User is organization admin: Check this box to allow the user to perform all tasks, including managing applications, device profiles, devices, gateways, and users.
  • User is device admin: Check this box to allow the user to manage device profiles and add or manage devices on existing applications.
  • User is gateway admin: Check this box to allow the user to manage gateways.

Note: If you do not check any boxes, the user will be able to see all data, but unable to make modifications.

Add User Form
