LoRa Basics Modem and LoRa Edge documentation

Introduction

LoRa Basics™ Modem and LoRa Edge™

Introduction

The LoRa Basics™ Modem products and the LoRa Edge™ Asset Management Platform let your Internet of Things (IoT) devices built with LoRa® chipsets easily communicate with Semtech’s LoRa Cloud™ services. LoRa Basics Modem, an open-source software library, and LoRa Basics Modem-E for the LR1110 LoRa Edge device, offer an easy-to-use communication stack and include out-of-the-box integration with the LoRa Cloud Services, which provide modem management and geolocation features for both mass market and private device deployments.

Background

This documentation set has been organized into a few broad categories to help readers find the level of detail they need.

Note

Where possible, links to the glossary and pages with additional details have been included in the text.

Pyramid of hierarchal knowledge and source

The Overviews and Use Cases contain the highest level of information. Specifically, the Overview pages provide a brief introduction to various concepts and the Use Cases provide theories of operation that apply to specific use cases, such as asset tracking, cold chain monitoring, etc.

The content in the Scenarios category goes a little deeper. This category contains descriptions of specific tasks that use some or all of the components in the system that are necessary for implementing a Use Case. The Scenarios can be thought of as a basic description of how to achieve certain milestones required for implementing a Use Case. Many of these scenarios are applicable to several (if not all) Use Cases.

The documentation in the Component category goes even further into how to implement a use case. The content in this category describes the components that provide specific functions and APIs. Specific functions include LoRa Edge Modem features such as Large File Upload and the data streaming service called ROSE.

Finally, the remaining set of categories contain the reference manuals, datasheets, and Service Level Agreements. These documents provide the literal details of specific commands and the behaviors of various components in the system. However, they provide little (if any) guidance on best practices and recommended behavior. Rather, they are the authority for the required stimuli and expected behavior of Semtech’s technology.

LoRa Edge™

The LoRa Edge Asset Management Platform is an ultra-low power platform that integrates a long range LoRa transceiver, multi-constellation scanner, and passive Wi-Fi access point MAC address scanner that targets asset management applications.

The LR1110 chip uses Semtech’s LoRa Cloud geolocation capabilities to significantly reduce power consumption by determining asset locations in a cloud-based solver. For more information, see the Overview of the LoRa Edge Asset Management Platform.

Note

The LR1110 chip can be used as a transceiver or a modem. When used as a transceiver, it does not operate natively with the the LoRa Cloud Modem & Geolocation Services. However, LoRa Basics Modem can be implemented on the application microcontroller unit (MCU) of an end device to provide this operation. An example project for switching an LR1110 chip between transceiver and modem can be found here: https://github.com/Lora-net/lr1110_updater_tool.

LoRa Basics™ Modem

LoRa Basics Modem is a software library running on the application MCU of an end device, providing device and data management convenience functions that work seamlessly with the LoRa Cloud services.

A quick walk through of LoRa Basics Modem is available, and feature details can be found in this collection of documents.

Features:

LoRa Basics™ Modem-E

LoRa Basics Modem-E is a software solution running on the LR1110 chip, combining LoRa Basics Modem services and the LR1110 geolocation features.

A quick walk through of LoRa Basics Modem-E is also available. Additionally, feature details can be found in this collection of documents.

LoRa Basics Modem-E is part of the LoRa Edge Asset Management Platform. For more information, see Overview of the LoRa Edge Asset Management Platform.
